Kirstie Simson
10:00 - 11:45 October 11-13
What moves us and why?
There is deep inspiration and rigor in a practice of improvisation that posits vulnerability at its heart. Developing the skills to care for, engage, respect and respond to that state of vulnerability gives life and depth to improvisation, making it powerful and transformative.
Kirstie Simson will share her extensive experience of dance improvisation in this workshop. She will share what has kept her inspired in her practices for the last three decades. The workshop will include practical explorations of movement and attention. With an aim to develop and tune kinesthetic and perceptual awareness as a means of expanding experience and the grasp of what is available to us when we move. The classes will be about listening in the body and applying that listening to the activity of moving.
The workshop will include facilitated exercises, open time for play and exploration, movement scores, observations and discussion. Much of the work will be experienced through partnering and connection with others, balanced with solo work and time for processing and reflection.
Kirstie views her art form as a life practice. She will share insights gleaned from thirty-two years experience of loving and living dance improvisation, and why she believes the underlying principles practiced through this work are so important for todays world.
Kirstie draws from her knowledge of contact improvisation, dance techniques, the Alexander technique, aikido, meditation and her extensive experience of improvisation in performance. Her work explores the huge potential of the body’s response to the primal urge to move, inspired by the energy released through human interaction, physical challenge and a daring to go beyond inherent ideas of limitation.

13:45 - 15:30, October 11-12
The aim of this workshop is to develop conscious presence while improvising in a performance. Each session begins with exercises that explore relationships between thought, movement and presence in the immediate environment. By promoting a greater awareness of sensory input, the performer becomes better equipped to interact with their internal and external impulses.
The session continues with examples of both fixed and open structures in which the participants improvise with such elements as dance, music, text, and light. Through practice and theory, participants explore a process by which they collectively experience spontaneously created compositions.
